What Causes of Varicose Veins and Venous Insufficiency?
Veins are the conduits that carry blood back to the heart. They have a series of one way valves that allow blood to go up the leg and then to the heart. The normal direction of flow is from more superficial veins to deeper veins. If some of these valves are not functioning normally (become incompetent), blood can reverse flow and go back down the leg resulting in high pressure, enlarged superficial varicose veins which can cause pain, fatigue and burning. It can cause swelling and in severe cases contribute to the development of leg ulcers which are very difficult to heal. Some predisposing factors include:
- Heredity
- Pregancy
- Jobs that require long periods of standing or sitting
- Previous history of superficial or deep vein thrombosis
How is Venous Insufficiency Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of venous disease first requires a detailed medical history and physical examination. Next, an ultrasound of the veins of the lower extremities is performed. At this point a review of information obtained allows the vein specialist to formulate a treatment plan.
